Going on a long car journey? Perhaps you’re planning a road trip? We’ve gathered eight must-have smartphone apps for a better car journey.

Do not use your phone while operating your vehicle. Simply set up any of the apps before your journey, or get your passenger to operate them as you drive safely!


Waze is the alternative to the maps app that comes as standard with your smartphone. Whether it’s Google Maps or Apple Maps your phone comes equipped with, ditch it in favour of Waze. Available in both the Google Play Store and the App Store, this app helps you dodge traffic. With updates on traffic from real people in real time. You can receive notifications before you reach a police incident, traffic jams, road hazards and more.

Their tagline ‘music for everyone’ is definitely accurate. With a database boasting over 30 million songs and over 2 billion playlists, Spotify is an app perfect for any road trip. You can create your own playlists full of your favourite songs, or access one of the ready-built playlists from Spotify themselves or other users.

Whether you’re driving in familiar territory or it’s a completely new area of the country, finding the nearest petrol station quickly can save you valuable travel time. The WhatGas app, available on both Google Play and the App Store, can help you locate your nearest AND cheapest petrol station. All close-by petrol stations are shown in map and list form, helping you easily choose and navigate to each.

Audible, an Amazon product is the perfect road trip companion – particularly if you’re driving alone. This free app from PocketGPSWorld is a must-have app for all drivers. When you’re driving through a new area, you aren’t familiar with their speed camera placements. The app doesn’t just warn you of speed cameras, it can also notify you when there are red light camera warning systems in place, too.

Find My Car

Parking your car then finding your car again can waste unnecessary time. Particularly when you park at the airport or at a events venue car park. With the Find My Car app, you can save your location, take a photo of your car and even add some parking notes. Then when you’re trying to locate both your car and the car park, you can simply locate your car’s last saved position and follow walking directions right to your car.

AA Parking

Trying to find a reasonably-priced car park can be tricky – particularly when you’re visiting a new part of the country. With AA Parking from, you guessed it, AA, you can locate spaces in real-time with ease. The app covers all paid and free car parks located in the UK and Ireland.

The app also displays opening hours and prices, park and ride locations and also generates directions to the car park’s entrance.
