More about Rotherham and the surrounding area
A large town in South Yorkshire Rotherham is a town that straddles the River Don - it has been a market town for over 800 years. The town's settlement can be traced
back to the Iron Age and Roman times. Although the area had been mainly known for its iron, it was coal that brought the Industrial Revolution to Rotherham.
The exploitation of the coal led to infrastructural improvements along the River Don which enabled the industry to thrive even more so for the town.
The town is home to a 15th Century chapel, the Chapel of Our Lady on the Bridge. This chapel is one of four Medieval Bridge Chapels left in the country.
Built in 1483, the chapel was mainly used by visitors and travellers to the town to pray they had a safe journey.
The Walker family were known in Rotherham for building many iron bridges around the country, but between 1744 and 1815 they manufactured 13,000 tons of cannon for use
by the Navy and the Army - that's a lot!
There are many celebrities and well-known faces hailing from Rotherham including children entertainers The Chuckle Brothers, Conservative politician William Hague,
goalkeeper David Seaman and football referee Howard Webb.
